Email Client Setup

While all Interactive Media Consulting customers have access to webmail, most will want to configure their personal email client to send and receive mail.

Settings Overview

Email settings will remain the same across various hosting providers except for the incoming and outgoing mail server addresses.  Incoming and outgoing server addresses are listed by host at the bottom of the Settings Overview section.

Account Type – Post Office Protocol Version 3 (POP3) or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)

When configuring your email client you will need to decide which email protocol to use, each protocol is defined below.

Post Office Protocol Version 3 (POP3)

A protocol for receiving email where the server pushes emails out to all your devices and any action you take on one device (e.g. you delete an email) is not mirrored on any other devices.

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)

A protocol for receiving email by syncing your email client with the mail server.  Any action you take on one device (e.g. you delete an email) will be mirrored on all other devices synced with that email account.  IMAP is beneficial for people who manage large volumes of email during the day, especially from multiple devices.

Any field that asks for your Username, User ID, or Email Address will require you to enter your full email address.

Any field that asks for your Password will require you to enter either the Password you were assigned by Interactive Media Consulting, or if you changed your Password at any point, that Password.  If you don’t remember your password please refer to our instructions on Changing your Password.

Security – Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS)

We recommended using SSL/TLS when configuring your email client as it adds a layer of security to your email messages preventing them from being accessible to the public.

Incoming and Outgoing Server Addresses

Use the table below to determine the correct incoming and outgoing server settings you will need to use according to what Host and Account Type (POP3/IMAP) you are using.

Incoming and Outgoing Server Port Numbers

Use the table below to determine the correct incoming and outgoing server port numbers you need to use depending on whether or not you are using SSL/TLS.  Port numbers should be the same across all hosts and email clients, they will only vary based on security settings.
